Spectacled owl
The Spectacled Owl (Pulsatrix perspicillata) is a striking and elusive bird native to the tropical rainforests of Central and South America, including Costa Rica. Named for the distinctive white feather "spectacles" around its eyes, this owl is one of the larger species in its range, with a length of up to 48 cm (19 inches). Primarily nocturnal, the Spectacled Owl is a skilled hunter, preying on a variety of animals such as small mammals, birds, and insects. Its deep, resonant hooting call is often heard at night, adding an eerie yet captivating soundtrack to the rainforest. In Costa Rica, the Spectacled Owl can be spotted in lowland forests and sometimes in plantations or secondary growth forests, making it a fascinating subject for birdwatchers and wildlife enthusiasts exploring the region.
