Agouti

The agouti (Dasyprocta punctata) is a common sight in the diverse ecosystems of Costa Rica, where it plays a crucial role as a seed disperser. These medium-sized rodents sport a reddish-brown fur coat and distinctive white underbellies, blending seamlessly into the forest floor. Agile and quick-footed, agoutis are often spotted darting through the undergrowth in search of fallen fruits, nuts, and seeds, which they hoard in caches for later consumption. Their keen sense of smell helps them locate buried treasures, contributing to the dispersal of seeds and the regeneration of the forest. Despite being hunted by predators such as jaguars and birds of prey, agoutis thrive in the protected habitats of Costa Rica, demonstrating their adaptability to various environmental conditions. Conservation efforts aim to safeguard the habitats of these vital seed dispersers, recognizing their significance in maintaining the ecological balance of the region.
