Heliconias

Heliconias, also known as lobster-claws or false bird-of-paradise, are iconic tropical plants found abundantly throughout the diverse landscapes of Costa Rica. These striking plants, belonging to the Heliconiaceae family, boast vibrant, elongated bracts that resemble the shape of lobster claws or bird-of-paradise flowers. Heliconias thrive in the country's warm and humid climate, adorning the forest understory, riverbanks, and gardens with their flamboyant blooms. Serving as essential nectar sources for hummingbirds and other pollinators, heliconias play a vital role in supporting local ecosystems. Additionally, their robust foliage provides shelter for various small animals and insects. Heliconias are also popular ornamental plants in Costa Rica, often cultivated in gardens and landscapes for their tropical allure and long-lasting cut flowers.
